LONDON WEEKEND

The London City Race is now well established as a great Urban orienteering event and this sixth one was run on the Isle of Dogs for the first time and attracted runners from 31 countries. Organised by South London Orienteers over 1200 competitors travelled on the Dockland Light Railway to the start by West India Docks and ran along courses planned to visit areas to find controls around high rise buildings including Canary Wharf, along riverbanks, across swing bridges and through Mudchute, the inner city farm.

Top runner from the club was Riina Kuuselo who stood on the podium after coming in 3rd place in the Womens Elite 8.1k course taking 51.18mins, only 2 minutes behind the winner Anneke Bjorgum from Sweden, Julie Emmerson was 16th and the top placed W18 in the same race taking 58.20mins. On the Mens Elite 10k course with 116 competitors, Octavian Droobersā€™ William Gardner came 5th in 52.47mins, Ian Embrey 16th in 57.20mins and Robert Gardner 37th in 61.56mins. Club Chairman Liz Phillips was 12th on the Womens Veteran 6.1k course taking 48.09mins. Mike Hampton was placed 16th taking 43.01mins on the hotly contested Mens Ultra Veterans 60+ 5.2k course with 123 competitors, only 6 minutes behind the leader.

On the previous day 300 competitors enjoyed a fine day at the Ultra Sprint event in Victoria Park, London. Competitors were tested at fast map reading and fast punching in the three preliminary rounds followed by the finals in the afternoon. Liz Phillips W45 came in 7th as did Bruce Bryant M55 in the preliminaries in their age class, both earning points in the UK Orienteering League. This event and the City race event both count towards the 2013 UKOL and after 15 out of 19 events Octavian Droobers are now in second place out of 115 clubs in the country with 5956 points behind South Yorkshireā€™s 6575 points.

West Midlands League Event

Chasewater was the location for the league event staged by Walton Chasers on Cannock Chase and first home for the club was Harrison McCartney M16 on the long Brown 9.63k course which he completed in 63.13mins, father Chris McCartney M40 was 3rd in 72.15mins, Tom Jeffries M40 was 5th in 78.26mins and Ondrej Bajgar M21 6th 81.54mins. On the Blue 6.93k course Aleksandrs Ivanovs M21 was 5th in 51.41mins and Sheila Carey W65 was 5th in 42.07mins and Stephen Elkington M16 6th 42.41mins on the Green 4.85k course. John Bowman M70 was 3rd 46.28mins and Roger Hailey 4th M75 52.11mins on the Short Green 3.93k course. Pippa Smart W10 was 4th on the Yellow 2.73k course taking 25.35mins. Next league event is on 13 October at Bucknell Wood, Herefordshire.
