RELAY WEEKEND

Peter Palmer Relays

Congratulations to the 6 junior members who took part in the Peter Palmer national interclub relays held this year at Hawse End, near Derwentwater, Keswick, in the Lake District. The 6 lap race with starts at 5am in the dark saw the first few leg runners wearing head torches to help navigate around their courses. The team of Harrison McCartney, Nathan Lawson, Hamish Rogers, Julie Emmerson, Aimee Morse and Matt Elkington had a very exciting time coming in 2nd behind South Yorkshire and only 1 second ahead of third placed MAROC, the Aberdeenshire Club. Hamish Rogers and Julie Emmerson achieved the fastest times on their laps and Matt Elkington, last runner, kept ahead of the MAROC rival in the run in ensuring the club held onto the second place.

West Midlands Relays

Suzanne Humphries, Vice Captain, was very pleased with the performances of the 50 club members, including quite a few first timers, who turned out on a sunny day to run through the woods on the National Trust, Dudmaston Hall Estate, near Kidderminster. The club won 6 trophies and several other teams finished in top 3 positions. Two of the trophies were won where all 3 people in the team were from the same family.

The first of these was in the Mini Relay, under 12 years, where Felix, Florence and Oliver Lunn sprinted their way to victory in a very closely fought competition, with only 4 seconds between them and the Harlequins team who came in second. The second family win was in the Mens Open Class with father and sons team, Richard, Rob and Will Gardner who took 136.39mins and our other Mens Open team of Alistair Powell, Anne Straube and Aleksandrs Ivanovs came in second in 154.49mins.

The Junior Mens trophy was won by Will Heaton and brothers John and Luke Cherry in 54.36mins. Liz Cross, Jill Emmerson and Suzanne Humphries won the Senior Womens, over 40, trophy taking 125.13mins over 11 minutes ahead of Wrekin's team. Winning the Senior Men's Trophy after several years was a great achievement for the club and the team of Tom Jeffries, Lesley Ross and Barry Elkington did it in great style in 164.03mins, ahead of Walton Chasers team who took 207.22mins.

Sheila Carey got off to a great start in the Super Veteran Womens class and with her team of Thelma Spalton and Sue Bicknell came in 1st in 124.29mins ahead of ODs second team of Margaret Willdig, Karin Kirk and Sue Hallett who took 140.03mins.
