GREAT PERFORMANCES ON BUSY WEEKEND
Congratulations to juniors: Will Gardner, Sophie Kirk and Julie Emmerson on being selected to the British Orienteering Talent Development Squad for 2012/13.
Club juniors had a busy weekend representing England and their schools in two major events held over this weekend.
At the Junior Home Internationals, in Surrey, a strong England team beat Scotland, Wales and Ireland in both the individual and relay events. Contributing to these successes in the individual races were Harrison McCartney M14 who came first in 29.38mins on the 3.84k course, Julie Emmerson W16 also first in 33.16mins on the 4.46k course and Matt Elkington 5th in 49.44mins on the 7.3k course. In the relays both Harrison's team of 3 and Julie's team both came in first place to top the leader board in the boys and girls relays.
Meanwhile back at Kingsbury Water Park club members Carolyn Marr and Mel Elkington, also secretary of the British Schools Association, mustered much support from club members to stage a terrific British Schools Score Championships for schoolchildren from around the country. Many schools from around Coventry and Warwickshire attended and of the 67 pupils who competed most are junior members of Octavian Droobers.
Special mention must be made of the girls’ team from King Henry VIII School in Coventry for winning the trophy for Upper Secondary Girls, to Kenilworth School boys who won the Upper Secondary Boys team Trophy and to the Kenilworth School Upper Secondary Girls team who came second. Congratulations also to Kenilworth School for coming 2nd in the Lower Secondary Boys team and to King Henry VIII School coming 2nd in the Lower Secondary Girls team. Club members who contributed high scores for their respective schools were Olivia Bailey 2nd in the Year 5 event, Ella-Rose McCartney 1st Year 8, Aimee Morse 3rd Year 10/11, Rachel Emmerson 1st Year 12/13, Daniel Kotecky 3rd Year 12/13 and Zoe Nicolson, Rhiannon Cope, Jeremy Knott, Stephen Elkington, Jake Lambert, Tom Lea, Rachel Johnson, Tamsin Alcock, Clair Teed and Patrick Roddy who all had good runs on the day. On Sunday 60 club members travelled to Hednesford Camp, Cannock Chase, to compete in the West Midlands League. Top finishers were Riina Kuuselo W21 who came first on the Blue 6.5k course in 43.52mins, Robert Brandon M60 3rd in 34.21mins on the Green 4.3k course, John Bowman M70 3rd in 36.26mins on the Short Green 3.19k course and Will Southall 4th in 33.06 on the Light Green 3.27k course.
The two day October Odyssey held at Sneaton Forest near Whitby, saw Mike Hampton M65 coming in overall first place taking 30.30mins on Day 1 middle distance and 49.43mins on the long distance Day 2 event. Anne Straube W35 won her class on the Blue course taking 46.16mins and 1.01.49mins respectively.
The charity score event at Elmdon Park, Solihull, organised by John Middler raised £163 for Leukaemia Research. Winner of the 60 minute score event was Chris MacKenzie M20 from CLOK club who scored 320 points (finding 32 controls) in 44.52mins and Ed Broadberry M16 from King Henry VIII school who scored 210 points in 44.52mins on the 45 minute score event.
Chris MacKenzie organised an event at Warwick University around the campus and new orienteer Nick Buckley M10 came 1st on the short 2.1k course in 37.53min. On the Middle 3k course, Bill Nicolson M45 was 1st in 19.49mins; Warwick University student James Newling was 2nd in 27.41mins and Jeremy Smith M45 3rd in 29.52mins. Stuart Thomson M21 from FVO was 1st in 25.40mins on the Long 4.8k course, Thomas Honniball M21 2nd in 27.40mins and Brian Ward HALO M50 3rd 28.40mins.
