Organiser's comments:

Rough Close delivered a fantastic evening for orienteering in these summer-nettle-free woods. Including all the scouts there were about 90 competitors in total. A big thank you to Mel, Juliette and Karin who help throughout the evening, Sian who sorted the results, and Andy who also helped a few newcomers. Thanks also to Sam, and the Lunns: Felix, Ollie, Florence and Tabitha who collected controls. And lastly to Alistair Powell who organised the Scouts to provide the BBQ, and for feeding my son, who ate most of the family's burgers!

Rough Close is a delight to set courses in, the map is very accurate, especially the mapping of the thickets and ditches, which makes for relatively technically challenging courses. The Long and Middle used most of the 37 controls, sometimes more than once, and I tried to vary the courses as much as possible with long legs into the vaguer areas, some super-easy legs then some short technical legs to try and trip people up who didn't control their speed. The Yellow and Orange courses were two simpler tours of the area using the more distinct tracks with the odd trickier control or leg.

Will Gardner showed his class in whitewashing the field in the Long course before the hungry pack of chasing juniors Oliver, Felix and Sam. Will's dad Richard completed a double taking out the Middle course before juniors Joe Quinrey and Pippa Smart. Naomi Powell ran to the race, won the Orange course, then ran home again, banking some extra training; beating Eoin Harkinson and Josie Smart. And in the Yellow course Adam Landels beat Tilly Flippance.

Thanks for coming and enjoying the courses, and for all the compliments regarding the planning. The weather forecast for Sunday at Burton Dassett, and next Wednesday at Draycote Water looks like more sunshine, hope to see you all there!!!

Alistair
