We had looked forward to organising and planning this event very much. It was, therefore, very disappointing that a small number of visitors to Abbey Fields thought it was great fun to remove several of our controls during the afternoon whilst we were setting up for the event. Although we managed to retrieve most of them, three of them were not to be found anywhere and we had to provide substitutes from spare controls. Even during the competition, two controls on the Long course were again “relocated” and had to be searched for by runners on the course and returned to their correct positions. Thank you to anyone who did so as we realise this would have delayed you and affected your times. Subsequently, we have not disqualified anyone who missed those controls that were known to be affected. On a positive note, several people commented on how much they had enjoyed the courses. Thanks to all of you who came to run and dealt with the problems so stoically.
We would like to extend heartfelt thanks to John Bowman, Barry Elkington, Liz Urquhart and John Middler who all spent time and energy trying to find the three missing controls – to no avail! Thanks also to Bruce Bryant for editing the map files and converting them to PDFs for me, and also to Sue Bowman who patrolled between controls keeping an eagle eye on them during the event. Thank you to Karin Kirk for helping with newcomers and John Middler, Bob Brandon, Steph Howarth and Graham Urquhart for control collection. Steph even managed to remonstrate with some guilty-looking culprits whilst collecting controls, which gave her some satisfaction after the frustrations of the day.
Finally, thanks to all at OD for reassuring us that we were not responsible for the anti-social behaviour of a few park visitors.
Lin & Steph
