ELEVEN MIDLAND CHAMPIONS
Octavian Droobers were celebrating winning eleven Midland orienteering titles at the championships staged on a very cold and overcast day in Sheringham Park, on the east coast of Norfolk. The terrain was tough, steeply contoured and the woods were full of impenetrable rhododendrons and holly thickets.
Congratulations go to youngest winner Aimee Morse W14 winning her first midland title on the 3.6k course with 165 metres of climb in 40.58mins. She was joined by winning ladies: Riina Kuuselo W21E on the 8k course with a staggering 460 metres of climb in 1.06.42mins, Anne Straube W35 6k course, 330m climb in 59.27mins, Jane Halliday W50 5.7k 295m climb 1.03.48mins and Sheila Carey W65 4.5k, 230m climb in 47.39mins - 14 mins ahead of nearest rival!
Matt Elkington M16 had a superb run and won on the 6.4k course with 310 climb in 50.59mins and Will Gardner M18E had an equally great run winning on the 9k course 470m climb in 1.05.50mins. New member Sami Takaluoma M35 won his event on the 9k course with 470metre climb in 1.20.01mins and Mike Hampton M65 5.7k 295m climb 55.10mins, Trevor Simpson M70 5k 275m climb 1.02.23mins and Frank Smith M80 4.5k 230m climb 1.51.16mins all claimed titles. Bruce Bryant came 1st on the M50 short 5.7k course in 55.38mins as did John Middler on the M55 short 5k in 1.03.06mins.

ROUND UP OF WEEKEND RESULTS
Octavian Droobers Club member John Ward planned and organised 3 testing orienteering courses, Yellow 1.4k, Orange 2.4k and Green 4k around Everdon Stubbs woods, near Daventry. The event attracted a wide variety of runners and walkers of all ages from around the Midlands. There were several new participants who enjoyed the challenge of navigating through the woods visiting control points in sequence using a detailed and specially drawn map, compass and electronic timing units.
On the short Yellow course junior member Alfred Bullus M12 came 1st in 15.10mins. Ben James M12 and Henry Winser M12 tied for second place in 15.22mins. On the Orange 2.4k course club member Eleanor Beach W14 was 1st in 31.10mins and Volker Beck M35 was 2nd in 32.59mins, Ros James W50 South Midlands 3rd 39.24mins. The club welcomed a new runner Paulius Tamosaitis M21, from Lithuania, who won the Green 4k course in 26.46mins, Sami Takalloma M35 was 2nd 27.59mins and 3rd David Williams M45, Harlequins, 28.37min.
Several club members travelled to Ashridge, near Berkhamsted, to a regional event organised by Hertfordshire Orienteering Club. Nearly 500 competitors competed in the Ace of Herts competition and Ella Rose McCartney W12 OD came 4th overall on the Orange 3k race and 1st in her age group in 35.05mins.
On the Green 6k course Sheila Carey W65 came 6th overall in 48.30mins, coming 1st in her age group with Sue Hallett W65 coming 2nd in 69mins. On the 8.2k Blue course Harrison McCartney M14 came 1st in his age group in 65.49mins. Also on the Blue in their age class Bruce Bryant M50 was 1st 62.24mins, Suzanne Humphries W45 1st in 73.12mins and Liz Cross W40 4th in 75.05mins. Sophie Kirk W20 came 9th overall, top woman runner, on the Short Brown 10.2k course winning her age class in 65.04mins.
At the Brindley and Hednesford event on Cannock Chase organised by Walton Chasers new club member Riina Kuuselo W21 came 2nd on the 7.26k Blue course in 45.33mins, Matt Elkington M16 was 2nd 46.44mins beating dad Barry Elkington M55 into 4th place in 49.26mins. Also on the Blue course was Julie Emmerson W16 who clocked 63.13mins also beating her Dad, club captain Andy Emmerson 64.13mins. Full results are on the Walton Chasers website.
Mike Hampton M65 came 3rd on the Urban race in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, as part of the two day Burns Weekend.
