PODIUM PLACE FOR CLUB JUNIORS AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Octavian Droobers team of juniors were narrowly beaten into third place scoring 865 points, behind Southdown Orienteering Clubs 871 and winners Bristol Orienteering Klub 874 points, at the national junior interclub Yvette Baker Trophy final. The event was organised by Hertfordshire Orienteering Club and run through Wormley Woods.
There were 9 contributing scorers for the club and three earned the maximum of 100 points for coming first on their courses: junior club captain Harrison McCartney, on the Green Boys, Oliver Lunn on the Light Green Boys and Tabitha Lunn on the Yellow Girls. Alicia Roberts scored 98 on the Orange Girls, Oliver Flippance 95 on the Light Green Boys, Luke Cherry 94 on the Orange Boys, Pippa Smart 94 on the Light Green Girls, Josie Smart 93 on the Yellow Girls and Florence Lunn 91 on the Orange Girls. Junior co-ordinator Kimberley Lunn said the team were very enthusiastic and extremely happy with their great achievement, many of whom had not experienced competition as this level before.
Meanwhile seniors travelled this weekend to the West Midlands Urban League in Staffordshire running around Leek town. Chris McCartney came 1st on the Mens 40+ course of 6.6km taking 44.59mins, Liz Phillips was 2nd on the W40+ course of 5.4km taking 50.50mins, Keith Willdig 4th in 40.29mins and Mike Hampton 6th in 41.36mins on the M65+ 4.3km course.
A trial event for a future British Mixed Sprint Relay Championship was organised by South Yorkshire Orienteers and held at the Endcliffe Student Village in Sheffield. An Ultra Veteran team from Octavian Droobers: Mike Hampton, Sheila Carey and Peter Carey came first in 47.17mins on the 5.3km course with 47 controls over the 3 laps.
