CLUB MEMBERS HELP ENGLAND TO VICTORY

Representing England, club members Andy Simpson M40, Julie Emmerson W20 and honorary club member Graham Gristwood M21 all won their classes to capture the trophy against European teams from Belgium, Netherlands and France. This is the 21st successive win by England. Graham Gristwood took 78.45min on the 15.1km course with 360 metres of climb, Andy Simpson 79.15mins on the 11.9km course and Julie Emmerson 67.01mins on the 7.7km course. At the same event, held in conjunction with the Southern Championships on Sunday, Anne Straube W40 was top of her class on the 7.7km course taking 75.46mins.

The 2 day Championship weekend included an Urban event on Saturday at The Nower organised by Mole Valley Orienteers several club members also competed in the event. Nathan Lawson M18 came 3rd on the longest 3.1km course in 19.43mins and Andy Simpson M40 was 8th in 21.07mins and Trevor Simpson M75 7th on the 1.7km Course 5 in 21.21mins and Ellie Simpson W10 6th in 16.13mins.

There were two West Midland Orienteering Association league events this weekend. The first at Longdon Wood, Wyre Forest was organised by Harlequin Orienteering Club. Luke Cherry M12 won the Yellow 1.9km course in 18.02mins and Chris Markham M10 was 3rd in 19.46mins. Peter Markham M12 won the Orange 2.6km course in 32.48mins, 2nd Rachel Alexander W55 35.21mins and 3rd Pippa Smart W12 35.59mins. Felix Lunn M14 was 2nd on the Light Green 3.1km course in 43.42mins and Peter Carey M70 3rd on the Short Green 3.3km course in 44.04mins. On the Green 4km course Mike Hampton M65 was 2nd in 38.24mins and Robert Brandon M65 3rd in 40.05mins. Iain Embrey M21 was 3rd on the Brown 7.7km course in 58.20mins. 

The second event was on Sunday on The Wrekin and organised by Wrekin Orienteers Club who were celebrating their 40th anniversary since the founding of the club.  The notoriously difficult steep, rocky and slippery terrain proved extremely challenging to all competitors. Leading club members in top ten positions were: Kin Kwan Kwok M20, 10th on the long Brown course 7.27km with 490 metres of climb in 1.50.36mins, Harrison McCartney M18 1st on the Blue 5.1km course in 1.05.04mins and Tony Feltbower M60 3rd in 1.09.55mins, Sam Leadley M16 7th on the Green 3.68km in 1.05.04mins and Mike Hampton M65 9th in 1.06.21mins, Peter Carey M70 was 3rd on the Short Green 2.43km course in 50.03mins, Anthony Walker M50 5th in 51.58mins and Roger Hailey M75 10th in 1.07.00mins, Felix Lunn M14 was 1st on the Light Green 2.73km course with 125metres of climb in 49.20mins.

On the Orange 2.36km course Peter Markham M12 was 1st in 38.35mins, Florence Lunn W12 was 2nd in 42.49mins, Pippa Smart W12 4th in 49.17mins, Diana Hailey W70 6th in 1.04.29mins and Tabitha Lunn W12 9th in 1.24.24mins. On the Yellow 1.81km course Nathan Chapple M12 came 1st in 20.46mins, Thomas Chapple M10 5th in 37.36mins and Christopher Markham 7th in 47.16mins.
