AROUND EYAM MOOR BY DAY AND WARWICKSHIRE BY NIGHT

Despite heavy rain Octavian Droobers were able to compete at various events around the country. At the UK Masters and East Midland Championships several members had good runs on Eyam Moor, near Chesterfield, at an event organised by Derwent Valley Orienteers. Riina Kuuselo won the W21 7.7k course in 70.31mins, 14 minutes ahead of her nearest rival. Other course winners were Anne Straube winning the W35 6.8k course in 76.52mins, Matt Elkington on the M18 7.7k course in 61.47mins and Thelma Spalton on the short W55 3.1k course in 65.43mins.

Sheila Carey came 2nd on the W65 3.8k course in 48.58mins as did Chris McCartney on the M40 9.5k course in 92.30mins. Harrison McCartney M14 came 3rd running up on the M16 6.8k course in 59.45mins. On the M65 5.3k course Gerry Spalton came 3rd in 68.11mins and Pete Carey 5th in 71.43mins. Also in 5th place was Roman Kotecky on the M60 course 6.8k course taking 86.07mins.

A hardy group of competitors took part over the weekend in the annual Octavian Night Race with a course planned by Bob Brandon covering countryside to the west of Henley in Arden. Ten people completed the gruelling 20 mile course with Alan Segar from Warwick the fastest in a time of 4 hours 31 minutes. Next were father and son Dave & Andy Marr, also from Warwick, in 4:50. Mark Bailey & Dave Masser from Hinckley 5:50 were only six minutes ahead of Anne & Vaughan Wade from Coventry. Glyn Sawford and Andy Sharp took 8:10. Last to finish was 73 year old iron man Mike Langrish from Shipston in 10:28. Each was rewarded by a full English breakfast served up by club member Hilary Simpson.

This Sunday Octavian Droobers are holding their club championships at Itchington Holt, Harbury, where the club will be welcoming new and experienced orienteers, runners and walkers.
