NEW BRITISH NIGHT ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONS

Braving some extreme conditions, with strong cold winds high up on Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire, several Octavian Droobers competed for the prestigious title of British Night Orienteering Champion. Congratulations to the new Champions - Philip, Anne and Sheila.  

Armed with a head torch, map, timer and a cagoule, Philip Vokes was first on the M21 11.2km course with a massive 430 metres of climb taking 62.57mins to win the M21 title, 36 seconds ahead of Joe Woodley from AIRE Orienteering. Anne Straube was 1st on the 6.3km course with 220 metres of climb in 61 mins to take the W40 trophy. Sheila Carey won the W75 title in 63.27mins on her 3.1km age class course.

Liz Phillips was placed 2nd on the W55 Long 4.6km course taking 63.11mins, Bruce Bryant was 4th on the M65 Long 4.9km course in 55.08mins and Peter Carey 5th on the M75 3.9km course in 88.38mins.

    WEST MIDLANDS CHAMPIONS Congratulations to the eleven Octavian Droober orienteers who became West Midlands champions in their age groups after competing in the annual event, held this year by West Midlands club, Harlequins, at Worcestershire Beacon, Malvern. Junior, Max Straube-Roth won the M14 year old trophy and his mother Anne Straube the W35 award. Alistair Landels won the M40 class, Juliette Soulard W50, Chris McCartney M50, David Leadley M55, Rachel Alexander W60, Barry Elkington M65, Karin Kirk W70, Sheila Carey W75 and Peter Carey M75.     MALVERN HILLS AND ITCHINGTON HOLT RESULTS The West Midland League event on Worcester Beacon, Malvern, organised by Harlequins Orienteering Club, saw club members competing on some really tough steep inclines, with areas covered in brambles and bracken. On the 5km course with 250 metres of climb Chris McCartney M50 was 1st in 46.56mins, David Leadley M55 2nd in 48.44mins, Tom Jeffries M50 4th in 50.38mins and Anne Straube W45 was the leading lady on this course taking 56.26mins.     NOVEMBER CLASSIC WEEKEND Resumption of the annual November Classic weekend was well received by orienteers of all ages from across the country. The weekend began on Saturday with an urban race in Salisbury, organised by Sarum Orienteering Club, with courses starting and finishing close to the Cathedral and climbing up into residential areas to the west of the city.
