OD’S VENTURE TO EUROPE

Many Octavian Droobers are enjoying the summer experiencing the sport of orienteering across Europe. The West Midlands Squad club members: Matthew Elkington, Stephen Elkington, Heather Rogers and Nathan Lawson are currently getting some great experience from competing in the O Ringen in Sweden joining 20,000internationalorienteers. Julie Emmerson is now in Bulgaria representing Great Britain in the Junior World Championships and other club members are in Zermatt, Switzerland, with 4500 orienteers.At these Swiss 5 day championships Amy Sarkies W35 has had a great start coming 13th in a field of 60 taking 46.15mins on the 4.3km course with 190 metres of climb. In the 3 day O Florival competition in the Vosges Mountains, France, Karin Kirk was placed 3rd in the W65 middle distance event.

West Midland Park Championships held at Brueton Park, Solihull, produced some new champions from the club:  Chris Markham won the 10 years and under boys and Florence Lunn the girls, Felix Lunn won the 11- 16 years boys championships and William Gardner the Mens 17 – 39 years. Anne Straube was top woman in the 17 – 39 years category,Chris McCartney top man in the 40 – 59 years class and Margaret Willdig top woman inthe over 60 class. Elsewhere in Solihull at Elmdon Park there was a good attendance and winners were Edward Buckley M10 on the Yellow 2km course in 30.38mins, Oliver Lunn M12 the Orange 2.5km course in 27.33mins, Bruce Bryant M55 Medium 3.8km course in 45.25mins and Alistair Powell M35 Long 5.4km course in 44.54mins.
