NEWS ROUNDUP FOR THIS WEEK

Five junior athletes from Octavian Droobers Orienteering Club have been selected to attend the GB Talent Development Coaching Camp which will be held in Aviemore, Scotland in July. Congratulations go to Nathan Lawson, Harrison McCartney, Will Gardner, Julie Emmerson and Harriet Lawson who earned their places having achieved excellent results at recent British championship events and selection races.

Club members were kept very busy organising two different events at the weekend. On Sunday over 220 competitors from around the midlands enjoyed the eight courses staged by John Middler at popular Brandon Wood and Piles Coppice near Coventry. The event is part of the West Midlands league and the club welcomed several new orienteers. On the short white 1.8k course newcomer Finn Hutton M14 came 1st in 10mins, Pippa Smart W10 was 2nd in 11.24mins and newcomer Sam Lockwood M10 was 3rd in 13.00mins. Visitors Sarah Bergin and Kim Geoghegan from Cranfield University won the Yellow 2.4k course in 25.39mins ahead of fellow university students Alex Charlton and Jonny Thorns in 26.09mins and Ben Bishop M12 from Leicester was 3rd in 27.42mins. Luke Lambert M14 won the Orange 2.8k course in 25.47mins, Sam Leadley M12 was 2nd in 31.37mins and William Heaton M14 was 3rd in 34.11mins.The Light Green 3k course was won by Hugh Lachlan M45 from Leicester in 30.50mins ahead of new member Jo Congo W35 31.48mins and Caitlin Chafer W12 from Leicester 40.48mins.

Harlequins Orienteering Club runners won the first 3 places on the Short Green 3.3k course: Russ Fauset M65 35.41mins, Colin Spears M75 35.52mins and Stephen Nightingale M65 36.11mins. OD members took the first 3 places on the Green 4.8k course: Daniel Roth M40 38.05mins, Stephen Elkington M16 40.31mins and Aimee Morse W16 40.47mins. On the long Blue 6.1k course Hamish Rogers M18 came 1st in 37.16mins, Harrison McCartney M16 2nd in 38.33mins and David Williams M50 from Harlequins 3rd in 40.04mins. Romualdas Stupelis M21 from Harlequins raced around the longest 8.2k Brown course in 44.52mins, Ben Stevens M21 from AIRE club was 2nd in 45.13mins and Ed Nicholas M21 AROS was 3rd in 49.24mins. Anne Straube and Daniel Roth organised a string course which proved very popular amongst the very young juniors and families.

John Bowman and a host of helpers held a beginners orienteering course at the reopening of the Draycote Water Visitor Centre, near Rugby on Saturday. Over 150 participants experienced the adventure sport on two short courses. Age group winners on the White course were juniors: Mia Playdon, 6 years, taking 4.45mins, Giane Marsella, 4 years, 5.35mins, Vicky Chaplin, 10 years 4.39mins, Cian Hutton 11 years 5.11mins, Adults: Tracey Quine 4mins. Winners on the longer Yellow course were juniors: Jack Playden 8 years 13.12mins, Jennifer Cherrett 10 years 10.59mins, Jonathan Cherrett 12 years 9.22mins Adults: Liz and Jay Colley 13.53mins.

Bentley Wood, near Atherstone, mid week is always a popular venue, and competitors ran around amongst the bluebells, wood anemones, pheasants and deer on the courses planned by Sheila and Pete Carey. Harrison McCartney M16 won the longest course taking 40.40mins on the Green 6.4k course, Chris Embrey M21 from Harlequins was 2nd in 42.07mins and father John Embrey M55 3rd 45.20mins. Andy White M55 from Harlequins came 1st on the 4.2k light green course in 38.58mins, Liz Phillips W45 2nd in 39.07mins and Phil May M60 3rd 46.13mins. Rob Smart M45 won the Yellow 2k course in 24.26mins, Nicholas Buckley and William Luxmore M12 took 36.41mins and Henry Adams M14 from King Henry VIII School 42.18mins. Newcomer Tom White M10 took 14.05mins to win the short White 1.7k course, Pippa Smart W10 23.43mins and Dylan Parkinson M7 25.54mins.
