OVER 200 COMPETITORS COMPETE AT SUTTON PARK

Octavian Droobers club members staged the last in the 2012 series of eleven West Midlands League events on Sunday at Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Organiser Mark Beverley was very pleased with the support and help he received from club members and the bright and dry weather attracted a large entry of 211 competitors of all ages from around the midlands. Bob Brandon planned eight orienteering courses from 1.8k easy to 9.1k technically hard around the popular park venue.

Winner of the short White 1.8k course was Catherine Bailey W10 from HOC in 17.33mins, newcomer Idie Biniam Frey W5 was 2nd in 36.35mins and OD youngster Freddie Walker M7 was 3rd in 39.24mins. Callum Pearman M12 another newcomer won the Yellow 2.8k course in 25.24mins, new OD club member Pippa Smart W10 was 2nd in 28.50mins and Jeannie Hunter W55 from COBOC 3rd in 35.18mins.

On the Orange 2.8k course Roger Hailey M75 easily won in 26.12mins, Charlotte Cairns Smith W10 from WCH came 2nd in 35.15mins and Rachel Alexander W55 was 3rd in 37.51mins. Heather Craig W14 from WCH was 1st on the Light Green 3k course finishing in 28.32mins, Alfie Bullus M12 was 2nd in 34.26mins and John Leyden M16 3rd in 38.22mins.

Hilary Palmer W65 from NOC was 1st on the Short Green 3.7k course in 33.59mins, Rosie Grayburn W21 from MDOC was 2nd in 35.11mins and John Robinson M60 from WCH was 3rd in 35.34mins. OD members took first 3 places on the Green 5k course Hamish Rogers M16 33.12mins, Pete Carey M65 42.15mins and Stephen Elkington 42.20mins.

Matt Elkington M18 came first on the Blue 6.2k course in 37.12mins, David Williams M50 from HOC was 2nd in 37.51mins and Clive Richardson M45 from WRE was 3rd in 40.45mins. On the longest course, the Blue 9.1k, Will Gardner M20 came first in 54.15mins well ahead of fellow club member Chris McCartney M40 65.08mins and Andrew Rowe M35 from POTOC 66.23mins.

On Saturday 29 December Octavian Droobers will be staging their annual Christmas Relays at Rough Close, Coventry, and on New Year’s Day the club will be competing against other West Midlands clubs in the annual Laurie Bradley Trophy Score competition which is taking place at MOD Stafford. OD are hoping to retain the trophy and plan to take a strong team to the event.
