ABBEY FIELDS, KENILWORTH RESULTS

Vice Captain Suzanne Humphries organised 4 excellent courses for the 75 competitors. She welcomed several newcomers, scouts and returners to orienteering to the event. It always is a popular location and she thanked Bob Brandon for setting up and John Ward for registration. In addition to the courses Chris MacKenzie and Amy Sarkies ran a popular coaching session for beginners and Alan Segar helped with newcomers.

On the Short 2k course we welcomed back Joe and his dad Steve Thornton who won the course in 14.39mins. Newcomers Pippa Smart and friend came second in 17.54mins and club junior Luke Cherry M10 came 3rd in 18.36mins. On the Medium 3.1k course with 19 controls Jeremy Stopford M21 from Harlequins Club came 1st in 23.39mins, John Ward M65 2nd in 26.58mins and newcomers Ben and Kevin Purdy 3rd in 27.58mins.

Mike Hampton M65 came 1st on the Long 5.5k course visiting 33 controls in the fastest time on 43.25mins, Tony Feltbower M55 was just behind him on 43.45mins and newcomer David Leadley M45 had an excellent run coming in 3rd in a splendid time of 45.58mins. Suzanne planned a 4th course called ‘Something Different’ which proved very popular and Roger Phillips M35 from Leicester Orienteering rose to the challenge and came 1st in 30.19mins ahead of Bob Brandon M60 36.13mins and John Middler M60 36.23mins.

Many club juniors travelled to Delamere Forest, Cheshire, to represent their schools at the British Schools Championships. A record number of competitors, 965, and schools, 175, came to the event. Some exceptional results were achieved and in the Year 10 event for boys congratulations go to Harrison McCartney winning in 18.06mins and Stephen Elkington who came 7th in 22.10mins, Year 12 boys 8th place for Hamish Rogers 28.57mins, Year 13 boys Matt Elkington came 2nd in 33.49mins and Daniel Kotecky 11th in 50.35mins. In the girls’ events Ella-Rose McCartney was 5th Year 8 in 16.17mins, Heather Rogers 5th Year 10 in 24.00mins and Aimee Morse 6th Year 11 in 33.25mins. In Year 12 Julie Emmerson had a great run finishing 1st in 27.19mins and sister Rachel came 10th in 39.43mins. Lizzie Davis was 6th and Claire Teed 8th in the Year 13 event.
