GOLD MEDAL FOR SOPHIE AT INTERLAND 

Sophie Kirk, 17, member of the Octavian Droobers Orienteering Club, represented England at the INTERLAND event in N E Belgium this weekend and came first in the D20 class (junior girls 18 – 20 years). Her maximum score of 12 points contributed to England winning the overall event with 245 points, ahead of the Belgian team’s 238 points. 

Six teams from Netherlands, France, NW Germany and Belgium compete for the Interland trophy which is held each year and England fielded a team of 42 male and female competitors across all ages 14 to 60. The D20 course was 7.09k which she ran in 50.32mins (7.07mins/k) 5 minutes ahead of the second placed England team member. The four other members of the club who represented England at Interland and helped England secure victory included Lesley Ross W40, running up to W21 (7 points) and Robert Gardner M20 (3 points). Making their debuts in the England squad were Hamish Rogers M14 and Rachel Emmerson W14 (reserve) who ran and came 3rd place. 

Many club members travelled on a beautiful sunny day to Walton Chasers local event at Fair Oaks and Birches Valley, Cannock Chase. Ella-Rose McCartney W10 came 1st on the yellow course, Suzanne Humphries 2nd on the Green course and Chris McCartney 3rd on the Brown course.

RESULTS FROM OVERSLEY WOOD, DYMOCK FOREST AND BURNHAM BEECHES

Octavian Droobers were running through woods over the weekend at three venues in Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Buckinghamshire. At Oversley Wood, near Alcester, organised by club member David Beal, orienteers were navigating on and off paths, up and down slopes, through undergrowth and brambles, to achieve as fast a time as possible on the 3 different length courses. Money raised by the farmer for car parking for use of the field alongside the woods was donated to Acorns Hospice.

 On the Green 4.7k course Chris McCartney M40 was 1st in 51.40mins, Andrew McNally M21 2nd in 54.59mins and Mike Hampton M60 3rd 60.16mins. Joe Thornton M16 was 1st on the Orange 2.8k course in 41.27mins, Ros James W45 (S. Mid O Club) 2nd 43.40mins and Kim M70 3rd in 45.45mins. On the short yellow 1.8k course 1st was George Loewy M10 teamed with mum Jane in 38.32mins, 2nd Dan Brennan M12 in 40.31mins and 3rd Ben James M12 in 41.01mins. 

At the inter club West Midlands League event in Dymock Forest, near Ross on Wye, league leaders Octavian Droobers accumulated good points to maintain their position. Top scorers and coming in first place were Harrison McCartney M12 on Blue 5.5k course, Stephen Elkington M14, Will Critchley M21, Mike Hampton M60, Trevor Simpson M70, Frank Smith M80, Lesley Ross W21 and Suzanne Humphries W45. Sheila Carey W60 was only 3secs behind winner and just missed out on scoring maximum points. 

Meanwhile at Burnham Beeches and Egypt wood in Buckinghamshire, club members missed the worst of the heavy downpours and enjoyed the beautiful beech woods. Bruce Bryant M50 had a very good run winning the Short Blue 5.7k course in 45.35mins, on the same course Liz Phillips was 2nd W45 in 55.14mins and Elizabeth Furness was 1st W55 in 74.50mins. On the Short Brown 9k course Dave Thacker M21 came in 3rd M21 in 68.12mins and Sophie Kirk was 1st W18 in 78.40mins. Bob Brandon was 2nd M60 in 59.54mins on the 7.4k Blue course with Dan Kotecky coming in 1st M16 on the same course in 68.11mins. Julie Emmerson W14 was 2nd W14 on the 4.7k Green course in 55.57mins.

CHALLENGING WEEKEND IN FOREST OF DEAN

The Forest of Dean was the venue for the Southern Championships Weekend and on Saturday afternoon several club runners travelled down to compete in the middle distance regional event staged in the Mallards Pike South area of the forest. The fast runnable, snow covered woodlands interspersed with drainage ditches produced some fast times. 

On the Brown 5.3k course Lesley Ross was 1st W40 in 51.20mins, Dave Marr 1st M55 50.16mins Sophie Kirk 1st W18 47.36mins and Ben Ross 1st M18 46.30mins. Daniel Kotecky was 3rd M16 in 42.39mins on the Blue 4.1k course. Trevor Simpson ran a fast race and was 1st M70 in 33.07mins on the Green 3.2k course. Hilary Simpson was 1st W70 in 1.01.44 and Julie Emmerson 2nd W14 in 30.23 with sister Rachael 3rd in 31.22mins. 

The national event on Sunday was held at the Lydney Park estate and featured a steep sided valley with a complex areas of old mine workings, woodlands and a covering of snow. The longer courses were quite tough but several club members achieved impressive 1st places: Julie Emmerson W14A 37.34mins, Sophie Kirk W18 Elite 1.13.40, Judith Guillaume W55S 54.17mins and Hilary Simpson W70L 1hr20mins.  Lesley Ross W40L was 2nd in 1.18.58, new member Marie Hauerslev W21Elite came in 3rd in 1.35.27 as did Ella Rose McCartney W10A 32.14mins and her father Chris McCartney M40L  in 1.30.03. Hamish Rogers M14A came in 4th in 47.29mins.   

Octavian Droobers Top the West Midlands League

Octavian Droobers are leading the league with 2721 points well ahead of nearest rivals Walton Chasers 2594 and Harlequin Orienteers 2320 in the West Midlands League. The next league event is on this Sunday at Dymock Forest, near Ross on Wye, organised by Harlequins, and the club hopes members will produce more good results.

SEVERAL TOP RUNNERS SCORE MAXIMUM POINTS IN WEST MIDLANDS LEAGUE

Several orienteers from Coventry and Warwickshire club, Octavian Droobers, scored maximum points in the West Midlands league. The club were in third place before the event at Brereton Spurs on Cannock Chase, organised by Walton Chasers Orienteering Club, and these good results should help the club move up the league. The area was mainly wooded, has extensive path networks and plenty of spurs and contour detail.  

Maximum point scorers and coming first on the Brown 8.95k 293m climb course were Chris McCartney M40 in 71.05mins, and Jessica Halliday W21 in 73.16mins. On the Blue 6.57k course Bob Brandon M60 completed in a fast time of 62.38mins and Lesley Ross in W40 69.14mins.  Daniel Kotecky M16 51.37mins, Roy Lindsell M65 46.42mins, Rachel Emmerson W14 49.07mins and Sheila Carey W60 55.08mins all came first on the Green 4.46k 185m climb Green course. Three runners came in first on the Light Green 3.47k course Roger Hailey M70 in 44.56mins, Frank Smith M80 95.19mins and Hilary Simpson W70 60.31mins. 

On Saturday Daniel Halliday M21 came in second place on the long Chasing Sprint course held around University of Birmingham campus in 35.06 mins having completed the first round in 14.39mins and 20.27mins respectively.  Will Critchley M21 3rd in 37.13mins, Chris McCartney M40 7th in 41.23mins and Matt Elkington M16 11th in 41.43mins. Sheila Carey W60 was 4th on the medium course in 43.48mins.

OCTAVIAN DROOBERS SHINE THROUGH THE MIST AT BLIDWORTH WOODS AND ON THE HILLS OF BURTON DASSETT 

Octavian Droobers produced some fine results on a drizzly day at the Robin Hood Trophy, Blidworth Woods near Mansfield, organised by Nottinghamshire Orienteering Club. The Forestry Commission woods, criss-crossed with sandy paths and with little climb, produced some fast running times.  

Seven first places were won by members with 6 of those from the ladies: Sue Bicknell on the W65L 3.9k course in 46.42mins over 4mins ahead of nearest rival, Sheila Carey W60L 4.7k 40.38mins, Lesley Ross W40 running up to the W21L course in 68.45mins, Helen Elkington W18Short 3.9k course in 51.36mins, Sophie Kirk W18L 7.1k in 51.42mins and new member Elizabeth Davies W14B 3.3k in 45.43mins. John Ward M65L was the club’s top man coming 1st in 50.55mins over 5.9k.  

Matt Elkington M16A 7.1k was 2nd in 49.14mins as was Chris McCartney M40L 9.8k in 66.23mins on their courses. In third place were Ben Ross M18S 55.17 mins, Robert Brandon M60L 56.14mins, Rachel Emmerson (W14) running up to the W16L course in 40.44mins just ahead of sister Julie Emmerson in 41.45mins, Mel Elkington W45L 85.08mins and Diana Hailey W65S in 51.14mins.  

A very misty day with low visibility created an interesting event organised by Mike Hampton up on the Burton Dassett Hills Country Park. The cold and murky day attracted a very good attendance of over 70 competitors. Making his debut was new member Will Critchley (M21), a Canadian international orienteer, who came in 2nd just 8 seconds behind Jules Simpson (M21) 30.10mins with Andy McNally M21 3rd in 38.28mins on the Green 4.1k course. 

On the Orange 2.5k course Alex Hedges M14 was 1st in 21.27mins, Ben Tawney M16 2nd in 22.11mins and Penny Oliver W14 23.47mins 3rd. Jennifer Sibley W20 was 1st on the Yellow 1.5k course in 21.16mins, Liam Crossling M14 2nd in 22.27mins and Andy Edwards M50 3rd in 23.41mins.

GOOD RESULTS FOR OCTAVIAN DROOBERS AROUND THE COUNTRY

Club members orienteered around the country and achieved some good results in and around Sheffield, Yorkshire and Bracknell, Berkshire.  

On Saturday at Beeley Wood, the South Yorkshire Regional Middle Distance event, Graham Gristwood (M21) came 1st on the Black 5.2k 255 metre climb course in 30.31mins clocking up 5.9mins per kilometre. Sophie Kirk  was 1st W18 on the Brown 4.2k 170m climb course in 40.06 mins, 9.5min per kilometre and Bruce Bryant was 4th M50 on the same course in 36.47mins. 

The national event including the Northern Championships were held on Sunday at Calver, south west of Sheffield, on a new orienteering area. The large open moorland of Big Moor edged with very steep boulder strewn wooded slopes challenged all our runners. Rachel Emmerson came 1st in 27.33mins and sister Julie joint 3rd, just behind, on 27.55mins on the  3.2k with 145m climb W14A course. Sophie Kirk on the W18 Elite 6.4k 170m climb course came in 1st place in 58.08mins over 5mins ahead of her nearest rival. Jill Emmerson was 4th on the W45S course in 49.14mins and Sheila Carey 3rd on the W60L in 57.06mins. 

Harrison McCartney (M12) ran up a class and finished 2nd on the M14A 3.9k course in 36.04mins and new member Daniel Kotecky finished in 1st place on the M16B course in 52.88mins. Robert Gardner M20Elite, 9.2k course 75.46mins, and Graham Gristwood M21Elite, 12.8k 345metre climb 80.01mins, both achieved 2nd places on their courses. On the M40L 9.2k 250metre climb course Chris McCartney came in 5th in 94.43mins and Robert Brandon was 4th 60.18mins just ahead of Mike Hampton 5th in 61.01mins on the M60L 6.3k course. John Ward came 2nd on the M65L 5.2k 160m climb course in 65.21mins. 

Meanwhile members travelling south to compete in the Concorde Chase regional event on Sunday achieved some fast running times at Upper Star Posts, Swinley forest near Bracknell, Berks, resulting in Barry Elkington being second placed M50 on the 10.8k Black course in 1.27.18, Lesley Ross also 2nd W40 on the Short Brown 7.3k course in 1.02.05, Matthew Elkington 2nd M16 on the Blue 5.8k course in 40.33mins and Stephen Elkington 4th M14 on the Light Green 3.3k course in 38.30mins.

OCTAVIAN DROOBERS ARE THROUGH TO FINAL OF COMPASS SPORT CUP

Andy Emmerson, club captain congratulated the 75 strong team who travelled to the Worcestershire Beacon, near Malvern, for the qualifying round of the Compass Sport Cup scoring  2381 points, overcoming stiff competition from nearest rivals Harlequin Orienteering Club  2293 and Walton Chasers 2204. The national inter club final will be held on Burbage Moor near Sheffield in October. 

The steep climbs, rough and icy terrain did not deter club members who ran fast times over all ten classes and in six of these members scored maximum 100 points for first places: Lesley Ross (Blue Women), Matt Halliday (Blue Men), Jane Halliday (Green Women), Sophie Kirk (Light Green Women), Harrison McCartney (Orange Men) and Julie Emmerson (Orange Women). 

The 25 top scorers included Dan Halliday, 99 points, Iain Embrey 93 and Dave Thacker 89 on the Brown course, Marie Hauerslev 98, Jo Halliday 96 (Blue Women) Barry Elkington 92, Andy Emmerson 90 (Blue Men), Suzanne Humphries 98, Liz Phillips 96 (Green Women), Mike Hampton 94, Bob Brandon 92 and John Ward 88 (Green Men), Sheila Carey 98 and Janet Richardson 90 (Green Vets), Matt Elkington 96, Will Gardner 92 (Light Green Men), Emma Kettley 92, (Light Green Women), Stephen Elkington 92, (Orange Men) and Penny Oliver 96 (Orange Women).  

Many other runners scored very well but could not count due to the restriction of the number of counters in each class. The results clearly illustrated the strength of the club juniors who dominated the Light Green and Orange classes.

 NATIONAL SQUAD SELECTIONS

 The British Orienteering Federation have just announced national squad selections for outstanding athletes and the club congratulates Graham Gristwood and Matt Halliday  who are now members of the World Class National Squad and Jo Halliday and Will Gardner  selected to the World Class Talent Squad.

REGIONAL EVENT AT SUTTON PARK

Octavian Droobers welcomed over 300 orienteers of all ages, 3 to 80 years, from all across the midlands, northern counties and Wales to Sutton Park on Sunday. The beautiful sunny day and good organisation headed up by club chairman Bob Brandon, resulted in some fast running across the parkland and through the woods. 

First places were gained by club members in their classes, George Loewy (M10A) 1.9k in 27.25mins, Alfie Bullus (M12A) 3.3k 66.28mins, Dan Halliday (M21S) 8.1k 48.58mins, Mike Hampton (M60L) 7.2k 62.05mins, Trevor Simpson (M70L) 4.4k 45.17mins and Frank Smith (M80) 3.7k 74.43mins.  In the girls events 1st places were awarded to Aimee Morse (W14A) 3.8k in 37.17mins, Lizzie Davies (W14B) 64.10mins, and Julie Emmerson (W16A) 42.40mins. Faye Greaves (W21S) 6k 80.55mins and Mel Elkington (W45S) 3.7k 54.51mins also came first in their events. 

Hamish Rogers (M16A) was 2nd 7.2k in 56.04mins, also in 2nd place were Pete Carey (M65L) 6k 58.l9mins, Heather Rogers (M14A) 3.8k 55.04mins, Emma Kettley (W18L) 6k in 56.14mins, Emily Humphries (W21N) 3.3k 68.02mins, Sheila Carey (W60L) 4.4k 52.29mins and Sophie Kirk (W18 Blue) 7.2k in 53.28mins. 

Third places were achieved by Tom Ross (M14A), Richard Gardner (M55L), Ella-Rose McCartney (W12A), Rachel Emmerson (W16A), Liz Phillips (W45L), Elizabeth Urquhart (W55S), Elizabeth Furness (W55L), Carolyn Marr (W60L), Sue Bicknell (W65L), Sue Bowman (W65S) and Hilary Simpson (W70L). 

Compass Sport Cup

Many club members are travelling to Worcestershire Beacon on the Malvern Hills to compete in Round 1 of the Compass Sport Cup, the premier national inter club event, and club captain Andy Emmerson said he has a strong team and is hoping the club will win and go through to the finals. Octavian Droobers came 2nd in the final last year losing out to South Yorkshire Orienteers.

ENGLAND SELECTIONS

Congratulations to club members Hamish Rogers M14, Graham Gristwood M21 and Lesley Ross W40 on being selected to compete for England in the Interland Cup versus Belgium (2 teams) the Netherlands, NW Germany and a team from France in NE Belgium on 7 March. Rachel Emmerson is selected as traveling reserve and will go with the England team to Belgium.
