Organiser's Comments

The Warwick University campus event is known for a good turnout and being scheduled just before the British Sprint Champs held on Loughborough University on Saturday, this was the opportunity to get some relevant sprint training. Designed for that purpose was the middle (3.2km) course and it indeed turned out to be the most popular one at the event - thanks to those of you who gave their map for recycling! The first control caused many competitors standing still directly after the start to plan their leg, with just a few not too fussed with control descriptions or codes who punched the more easily accessible control on the wrong side of the wall. While I agree that it was probably not fair to place two controls effectively within 50cm on opposite sides of an impassable wall, it hopefully served as a reminder to read descriptions before planning a leg and always check your control codes!
The long course had a map memory section on the Coventry side of campus to train planning the full leg ahead and remember where to go without constantly checking the map. Many embraced the challenge of a 5.6km course with a whopping 34 controls, others cherry-picked either the map memory section only or restricted themselves to the course on the map. The extensive use of flat controls on the map memory section meant that just running to roughly the right place was not enough, again control descriptions were the important guide to where exactly to look. Some new maintenance work forced moving one of my favourite control sites when placing the controls in the afternoon and required an update of the relevant memory map with a waterproof pen on the spot.
The short (2.1km) course had route choices on virtually every leg and required about 3.8km running on the optimal route. So well done to everybody completing the course who thought they were in for something less challenging.
I shall not forget to thank all those who helped organising the event: John Bowman for organising the permissions and access to the sport pavilion, Bruce Bryant for map updates, Roman Kotecky for doing the registration, EMIT hire and compilation of results, Daniel Roth and Roman Kotecky for helping with putting out controls, Sheila and Pete Carey, Daniel Roth, Suzanne Humphries, Bob Brandon and Sue Hallet for collecting controls. And thanks for everybody coming and sharing your excitement about the courses!

Anne Straube
