NEW YEAR HONOURS

Octavian Droobers retained the Laurie Bradley Trophy at the annual New Year’s Day event held this year at Kingsbury Water Park, Warwickshire. The trophy is awarded to the top West Midlands Orienteering Club and the club’s 25 top scoring members braved exceptionally tough conditions criss crossingthe park and woods battling through strong winds, heavy rain and deep lying water.

Bob Brandon thanked his very supportive band of helpers especially Barry Elkington for planning such a good course andGraham Urquhart who ran the electronic timing and recording throughout the event.  OD scored a total of 6730 points a long way ahead of nearest rivals Walton Chasers, from Cannock Chase, score of 5880. Each competitor scored 10 points for visiting each control in the maximum time limit of 1 hour. Matthew Elkington M20 scored the highest for the club, 380 points, having punched 38 controls in 58.28mins. The top juniors at the eventaged 18 years and under, were Stephen Elkington M18 320 points and Aimee Morse W18 300 points, from Octavian Droobers,whoboth received commemorative trophies.

The twenty two other contributing scorers for the club were, with 340 points Chris McCartney, Alistair Powell 330, Lesley Ross 310, Alastair and Richard Gardner300, Gerry Spalton and Keith Willdig 290, Dave Marr 280, Heather Rogers, Richard Perry and Suzanne Humphries 270, Jeremy Knott and John Ward 260, Liz Phillips and Carolyn Marr 250, Pete Carey 240, Stephanie Howarth and Oliver Lunn 210, Sue Hallett, Trevor Simpson and John Bowman 200 and Karin Kirk 190 points.

CHRISTMAS RELAYS

The Christmas Relays were fought out on a glorious sunny day at Rough Close,Tile Hill, Coventry, and the handicapped teams running four legs navigated through woods and open land around the scout camp at the event organised by Richard Gardner with family and club members helping. Barry, Matt and Stephen Elkington with Alistair Gardner were the winning team, Will and Robert Gardner shared the four legs and came second and Chris McCartney was third, by himself, having run all four legs. Prizes were also awarded to Pippa Smart and Sam Leadley for fastest juniors on the short Yellow leg.

ENGLAND SELECTION

Congratulations to Nathan Lawson M18 who has been selected to represent England at the annual Interland competition, which takes place in France on 30 March, Julie Emmerson W20 has been selected as a travelling reserve.

COOMBE, CANKLOW AND WENDOVER RESULTS ROUND UP

Canklow Woods, near Sheffield, was the venue for the South Yorkshire event where several OD members clocked up some good results.  Will Gardner M20 came 4th on the longest course, 7.4k with 265 metres of climb taking 53.12mins. Junior Harrison McCartney M16 on the same course took 56.36mins to finish in 8th position. Mike Hampton was the top M65 taking 58.20mins on the Blue 5.4k course with 190metres of climb and Thelma Spelton was 3rd W65 on the Short Green 3.1k course in 57.07mins.

Wendover Woods in the Chilterns is always a great annual pre Christmas event and juniors Daniel Walker M4 and Freddie Walker M8 were 5th and 6th respectively on the short White 1.9k course taking 27.48mins and 32.28mins. Will Heaton M14 was the top junior on the Light Green 3.7k course taking 58.38mins. On the Short Green 3.5k course Roger Hailey came 3rd overall and top M75, other top age positions on the same course were achieved by John Bowman M70 50.48mins, Janet Richardson W60 53.56mins, Hilary  Simpson W70 57.42mins, Mel Elkington W50 58.23mins and Jane Stew M55 1.06.59mins. Stephen Elkington M16 was top junior on the Green 4.7k course, taking 40.45mins, Margaret Willdig top W60 1.02.45mins and Carolyn Marr top W65 1.13.30mins. On the Blue 6.4k course Dave Marr was top M60 runner taking 1.05.50mins and John Ward top M65 1.18.43mins.

Coombe Abbey Country Park, near Coventry, was a very popular event organised by Hilary and Trevor Simpson with over 200 orienteers from all over midlands enjoying a fine day and competing on courses planned by Sue Hallett.  Harrison McCartney M16 came 1st on the longest course Blue 6.9k in 34.12mins, 2nd was Chris McCartney M40 36.19mins and 3rd Tom Jeffries M40 41.08mins. On the Green 4.8k course Lesley Ross W45 was 2nd in 33.14mins and Dave Marr M60 3rd in 33.41mins. Sheila Carey W65 was 2nd on the Short Green 3.3k course taking 29.18mins and Liz Cross W40 3rd in 30.53mins.

Three club juniors took the top three positions on the Light Green 3.9k course, Stephen Elkington M16 24.00mins, Aimee Morse W16 28.46mins and Ella-Rose McCartney W14 29.06mins. Sam Leadley M14 won the Orange 3.1k course in 24.14mins just ahead of club mate Dan Hobbins M14 24.53mins. The three top juniors on the Yellow 2.4k course were Oliver Lunn M12 13.15mins, Felix Lunn M12 16.03mins and Pippa Smart W10 17.17mins.
